2-Day Ayvalık Itinerary: What To See and Do

We spent two days in Ayvalık as part of a group trip through Turkey. There was nothing scheduled to visit, no specific attractions, and I think that’s exactly how this city should be experienced. It’s the kind of place where walking around, sitting by the water, and trying the local food feels like enough.

If you’re planning a short stay, here’s what our two days looked like, including slow walks, beach time, seafood and sunset views.

Day 1: Exploring Ayvalık

We arrived in Ayvalık around midday and started with a relaxed orientation walk through the old town. The streets were exactly what you’d hope for in a coastal town: narrow, slightly uneven, with colorful shutters and balconies full of laundry, potted plants and cats taking a nap. It’s a place that invites wandering more than sightseeing.

For lunch, we stopped at Açelya Cafe to try the famous Ayvalık toast, a heavy, cheesy, salty kind of sausage sandwich that’s exactly what you want after a morning on your feet.

After lunch, we had more time to walk around, no real goal, just letting the streets guide us. At some point in the afternoon, we stopped for midye dolma: mussels stuffed with spiced rice and served with a squeeze of lemon. They’re sold from small street carts and somehow manage to hit the exact balance between snack and experience. Plus they pair perfectly with Turkish beer.

Later, we headed to the waterfront to watch the sunset, which felt like a daily ritual in Ayvalık. People gathered along the edge of the marina, and the pace of the town seemed to slow down even more. One of the best sunsets I have seen in my life.

For dinner, we picked a spot on a street perpendicular to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Boulevard, one of those streets lined with outdoor tables. I don’t remember the name of the place, but there are plenty of solid options all along that stretch, especially if you’re in the mood for meze and grilled fish. You may not find someone who speaks english, but smiles and pointing at the menu will do it.

Day 2: Beach + Cunda Island

We started the morning with a traditional Turkish breakfast at our guesthouse, fresh bread, eggs, olives, cheeses, tea, all that you need. After that, our guide took care of everything, including the bus ride to Sarımsaklı beaches.

Our first stop was near Royal Beach, but most of the access there was private (there was even part of the beach only for policeman and their families, which was completely new to me!), so we kept walking until we found Grand Musho Beach. It was also a private beach club, but our guide got us a good deal on sunbeds and we were already tired of walking in the sun, so we spent a relaxed few hours swimming, reading, and enjoying the Aegean. I went for a short snorkeling session and managed to see a few fish.

In the late afternoon, we regrouped and took the bus over to Cunda Island. One of the best parts was stopping at Aşıklar Tepesi, a beautiful viewpoint at the top of a hill, and the view of the town and sea was perfect at that hour.

For dinner, we returned to the center of Cunda and found a spot tucked into a small square with great seafood and a friendly atmosphere. We really enjoyed the vibe of the island, so we stayed longer for drinks and yapping at a local bar, which was the perfect ending for our stay in Ayvalık.

Final Remarks

Ayvalık wasn’t packed with must-see landmarks or famous sights, and that’s exactly what made it memorable. With slow walks, casual meals, beach time, and sunset views, these two days felt like a pause button in the middle of our trip. It was a place to enjoy simply by being there, without needing a packed schedule.

  1. I’ve not been to Ayvalık, Turkey but sounds like the kind of place I’d love to experience on slow travel, no pre planned itinerary – just simply taking the day as it comes.

  2. I loved Turkey when I visited and there are so many more corners of it like Ayvalik I need to explore. Thanks for the inspiration.
