Kekova Sailing Day: The Best Turkish Coast Experience

Kekova, on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, is famous for its turquoise waters and the ruins of the Sunken City, and quickly became my favorite part of the whole trip. Most people visit on a day trip from Kaş or Demre, but my group tour included an overnight stay in the tiny village of Üçağız, a very pleasant and convenient surprise.

In this post, I’ll share what it’s like to stay in Üçağız, details of the private sailing trip around Kekova, and practical tips to make the most of your visit.

Staying in Üçağız

Üçağız is a quiet harbor village with only a few guesthouses and family-run restaurants, and being there felt like stepping away from the usual tourist trail. Once the day-trippers left, the atmosphere was peaceful, and waking up right by the water set the perfect tone for our sailing trip.

We stayed at a guestohouse only a few steps from the sailing dock, with super friendly owners, and I’m glad we stayed there. Üçağız gave me the chance to experience Kekova more slowly and authentically, a contrast to the busy coastal towns nearby, and it made our boat trip feel even more special. To eat, I can recommend the restaurant “Kordon Restoran”, where we had delicious fish and seafood with a beautiful view to the Marina.

Sailing Around Kekova

The real highlight of our visit was the sailing day. From Üçağız (Kekova Marina), our group set off on a private family-run boat along the coast, and we spent the day drifting past half-submerged Lycian ruins, the so-called Sunken City, which is even more magical than the photos show.

We stopped frequently to swim and snorkel in crystal-clear coves, where the water was so transparent you could see straight to the sea floor. Floating there, surrounded by turquoise waters and steep rocky cliffs, felt like a total escape from the usual sightseeing rush.

As we cruised around Kekova, we also passed by Simena (today’s Kaleköy), a tiny, picture-perfect village only accessible by boat or on foot. Even from the water, it looked magical, with stone houses cascading down the hillside, a medieval castle at the top, and cafés right by the shore. It’s also famous for homemade ice cream, which I regret not trying! If you have time, I’d recommend adding a stop here.

Lunch was served on board by the sweet couple that worked on the boat: fresh fish grilled right in front of use, meze, and classic Turkish dishes, simple but perfectly satisfying. Eating while anchored in the middle of the bay, with the sun overhead and the sea all around us, was one of those moments that makes you pause and appreciate the slower pace of life on the Mediterranean.

The sailing day was the perfect pause from all the sightseeing of the trip. No schedules, no list of things to do, just pure relaxation and fun.

Tips for Visiting Kekova

  • Booking a Sailing Trip: If you can, consider a small private boat or family-run operator rather than a large group tour. Our group was small, so it worked perfectly, but for larger groups I believe it would feel too packed. It makes for a more personal and flexible experience too.
  • Where to Base Yourself: Staying in Üçağız is ideal if you want a calm, authentic vibe, but there there may not be many accommodation options. Kaş or Demre are also popular choices.
  • Timing: Summer months (June–September) are perfect for swimming, but the water is pleasant as long as the weather is warm. Arriving early in the day helps avoid crowds at popular snorkeling spots.
  • What to Bring: Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a waterproof bag for your phone or camera. Snorkeling gear is often provided on private boats, but check first.
  • Food & Drinks: Lunch is typically served on board, and you can buy your drinks there as well. Please make sure to stay hydrated!

Final Remarks

The sailing trip around Kekova was easily the highlight of my time in Turkey. Between the Sunken City ruins, the clear turquoise waters, and the relaxed pace of life on the boat, it felt like a true escape from the usual tourist rush.

If you’re exploring Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, Kekova deserves a spot on your itinerary. Whether you’re on a tour or traveling independently, taking the time to slow down, enjoy the water, and appreciate the ruins from the sea makes it an unforgettable experience.

  1. Loved reading this! Staying in Üçağız sounds so peaceful, and that sailing trip with the Sunken City and clear coves looks unforgettable. Definitely adding Kekova to my Turkey list!

  2. While I want to see the sites in Turkey, I’ve been trying to find a getaway to somewhere non-touristy (and on the water) to counter the crowds and hustle and bustle. This sounds perfect!

  3. The best places when traveling are those tiny towns or villages where you step back in time. I’ve only visited Istanbul but I’d like to return to Turkey for sailing adventures. Lovely pics!
