Discovering Galicia, Spain: A 10-Day Itinerary

Nestled in the northwest corner of Spain, Galicia offers the perfect blend of lush landscapes, historic towns, and pristine beaches. This 10-day itinerary will guide you through some of Galicia’s most unique and beautiful destinations.

I travelled by car during this trip and that is what I recommend you to do, because some of these places are not easily accessible by public transportation.

Day 1: Tui and Monte Aloia

Begin your adventure in the charming town of Tui, located on the banks of the Miño River, which forms the border with Portugal. Explore the well-preserved medieval quarter, dominated by the Tui Cathedral. Wander through narrow cobblestone streets and soak in the historic atmosphere.

In the afternoon, head to Monte Aloia Natural Park, just a short drive away. This park offers stunning views over the river and the surrounding countryside. Take a hike along its trails to discover ancient ruins, lush forests, and scenic viewpoints, or enjoy a picnic with stunning viewa. It’s a perfect spot to reconnect with nature and enjoy the tranquility. It gets chilly up and foggy up there so make sure to bring a jacket.

Day 2: Islas Cíes

Today, set off early for a day trip to the Islas Cíes, part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. Catch a ferry from Vigo and prepare for a day of pure paradise. These islands boast some of Spain’s most beautiful beaches, such as Playa de Rodas, with its crystal-clear waters and fine white sand.

 

Spend your day hiking the island’s trails, birdwatching, or simply relaxing on the beach. Don’t forget to pack a picnic, as there are limited facilities on the islands. The pristine natural environment and unspoiled beauty make the Islas Cíes a must-visit destination. And don’t forget your snorkeling gear! You will be able to spot some beautiful fish.

Return to the mainland and enjoy your evening in Vigo. Take a walk along the waterfront promenade and enjoy the views of the Ría de Vigo. Relax at the Jardines de Montero Ríos, see the famous monument of Julio Verne and then head beach to the center to indulge in some of the city’s renowned seafood dishes at a local restaurant. On the way, you can also enjoy the beautiful Parque de A Alameda.

Day 3: Vigo

Spend the day exploring Vigo, Galicia’s largest city. Begin with a visit to the Casco Vello (Old Town), where you can stroll through its picturesque streets and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Mercado da Pedra, a bustling market famous for its oysters.

In the afternoon, head to Parque Monte del Castro, where you can have one of the best views over the city and the Ría.

Day 4: Pontevedra and Augusta Eco Wellness Resort, Sanxenxo

Spend the morning in the delightful town of Pontevedra. Known for its pedestrian-friendly old town, Pontevedra is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Visit the Basilica of Santa Maria, the charming Plaza de la Leña, and the bustling Mercado de Abastos.

In the afternoon, check into the Augusta Eco Wellness Resort, in nearby Sanxenxo, for a relaxing escape. Spend the rest of the day unwinding at this luxurious eco-friendly retreat. Enjoy the spa facilities, one of the best in Galicia,  take a dip in the pool or simply relax in the serene surroundings. It’s a perfect place to rejuvenate after a busy few days.

Day 5: Sanxenxo to Santiago de Compostela

After a delicious hotel breakfast, a relaxing morning at the spa or maybe even a cooking workshop at the Augusta Eco Wellness Resort, head to O Grove for a seafood lunch. O Grove is famous for its seafood, especially its shellfish, so make sure to try it.

In the afternoon, travel to Santiago de Compostela, the final destination of the legendary Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Upon arrival, take a leisurely walk through the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and admire the impressive Santiago Cathedral from the outside.

Day 6: Santiago de Compostela

After a delicious hotel breakfast, a relaxing morning at the spa or maybe even a cooking workshop at the Augusta Eco Wellness Hotel, head to O Grove for a seafood lunch. O Grove is famous for its seafood, especially its shellfish, so make sure to try it.

In the afternoon, head to the Cidade da Cultura de Galicia, a modern cultural complex designed by architect Peter Eisenman. This complex hosts various exhibitions, cultural events, and houses a library and museum with free exhibitions. Wander through the impressive structures and explore the ongoing exhibits that showcase Galician culture and art.

Day 7: Fervenza de Ézaro and Ourense

Leave Santiago behind and head to the spectacular Fervenza de Ézaro, a waterfall where the Xallas River cascades directly into the Atlantic Ocean. The sight of the waterfall is breathtaking, and the surrounding area offers lovely walking trails and viewpoints.

Continue your journey to Ourense. In the afternoon, catch the special tourist train to the thermal springs. This train, known as the “Termas Train,” departs from the city center and takes you on a scenic ride along the Miño River to the Termas de Outariz. Relax and unwind in the hot springs, surrounded by nature. Afterward, the train will bring you back to the city center. In the evening, explore the historic center of Ourense, known for its beautiful bridges and charming plazas.

Day 8: Ribeira Sacra

Embark on a day trip to the Ribeira Sacra region, renowned for its landscapes and terraced vineyards. Visit the Sil River Canyon, where you can take a boat tour to admire the stunning scenery, or simply go on some trails that will lead you to beautiful viewpoints. 

In the late afternoon, catch the special tourist train to the thermal springs. This train, known as the "Termas Train," departs from the city center and takes you on a scenic ride along the Miño River to the Termas de Outariz. Day 9: Ourense

Spend another day enjoying Ourense. Visit the Cathedral of San Martiño, the Santa Eufemia church, As Burgas. Explore the Alameda Park and San Lázaro Park, lovely green spaces perfect for a leisurely stroll. 

In the afternoon, visit San Francisco cloister. End your day with a walk along the Miño River and enjoy the scenic views, or maybe return to the thermal springs and relax.

Day 10: Departure

On your final day, take some time to relax until you decide to depart from Ourense. Personally, I enjoyed a shopping day in the city, some ice cream and the typical churros. 

This 10-day itinerary offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historic sites, and relaxation. Galicia’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage provide a unique travel experience that will leave you longing to return. I found it the perfect summer escape to take it slow, learn more and reconnect with nature.
