When I think of Italy, cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice immediately make my eyes shine of excitement. Milan, on the other hand, was never at the top of my list. It’s a vibrant city, yes, but it doesn’t quite have the magic of Italy’s other iconic destinations. If you share this sentiment, a single day in Milan is enough to experience the highlights and get a feel for the city.
Here’s how to make the most of one day in Milan:

Morning
Sforza Castle and Parco Sempione
Begin your day at the historic Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco), a symbol of Milan’s Renaissance past. Arrive early to beat the crowds and take a stroll through the castle grounds. The castle is home to several museums, but even if you don’t have time to visit them all, a walk around the exterior is well worth it. Afterward, enjoy a relaxing stroll through Parco Sempione, the beautiful park just behind the castle, offering a serene start to your busy day.
After your morning at the castle, head to the nearby Brera district for lunch. This charming neighborhood is known for its bohemian vibe, art galleries, and cozy cafes. Try some authentic Milanese dishes – perhaps a classic Risotto alla Milanese or Cotoletta alla Milanese. The relaxed atmosphere of Brera makes it a perfect spot to recharge before diving into the afternoon’s sightseeing.
Afternoon
Duomo di Milano and Rooftop Terrace
After lunch, make your way to the iconic Duomo di Milano. This stunning Gothic cathedral is the heart of Milan and a must-see for any visitor. Spend some time exploring the details of the interior, including the beautiful stained-glass windows. Then, take the elevator or stairs to the rooftop terrace. The rooftop offers breathtaking views over Milan and a close-up look at the cathedral’s famous spires. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Next, right by the Duomo, is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This 19th-century shopping arcade is an architectural marvel, with its grand glass dome and ornate mosaic floors. Take a moment to admire the design, stroll around, and perhaps enjoy a quick coffee at one of the historic cafes inside or do some shopping.
Teatro alla Scala
After exploring the Duomo and Galleria, head over to Teatro alla Scala, Milan’s world-renowned opera house, if that is something you are interested in. Even though it is one of the most visited places in Milan, I didn’t have the best experience there, so here is my advice to visit it, avoiding unpleasant situations.
Typically, you can visit Teatro alla Scala’s museum and auditorium. However, on performance days, the auditorium remains with the lights off for rehearsal, so you won’t be able to see anything. This is something we were only told when we got there, so we couldn’t see the auditorium. For this reason, I highly advise you to check the performance calendar in advance and maybe even buy the ticket only on site. In any case, you can still visit the museum, but in my opinion it is not as impressive.

Evening
Navigli District
As the day winds down, make your way to the Navigli district, known for its picturesque canals and vibrant nightlife. The area is filled with trendy bars, cafes, and restaurants, making it the perfect spot to enjoy an aperitivo or a traditional Milanese dinner. The lively atmosphere along the canals is a great way to wrap up your day in Milan, offering a taste of the city’s modern, youthful energy.
Bonus: More to See if You Have Spare Time
Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”
If you have extra time in your itinerary, don’t miss the chance to see Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, “The Last Supper.” Located in the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, this iconic painting is one of the most significant works of art in the world. Be sure to book tickets in advance, as entry is limited.
Shopping in the Fashion District
For those with a bit more time, Milan’s Quadrilatero della Moda is the ultimate destination for high-end shopping. Even if you’re not planning to buy, a stroll down Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga is always a good idea.
While Milan may not have captured my heart like other Italian cities, it’s definitely worth a day’s visit. From the historic Sforza Castle to the iconic Duomo, and from the elegant Galleria to the lively Navigli district, Milan offers a well-rounded experience that’s both rich in culture and modern charm. One day is just enough to see the highlights, leaving you with a taste of Milan that will make you appreciate this dynamic city for what it is.
